Trachurus trachurus is found in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, from Norway to South Africa, around the coast to Maputo (Mozambique) including the Mediterranean and Marmara Seas. It is typically found to depths of 200 m, however there are records extending the depth range to over 1,000 m. It is a widespread species and is the most abundant Trachurus species throughout its range, but the majority of its global population is thought to occur from Senegal northwards. In some parts of the Mediterranean, this species is overfished and the increased proportion of juveniles in Mediterranean catches is cause for concern. In the North Atlantic, the western stock is experiencing fishing pressure above the target Fmsy, SSB is qualitatively evaluated as declining, and fishing mortality on younger ages has reached record high levels. The Saharo-Mauritanian stock (and landings) is estimated to have declined by more than 90% over the past 30 years (three generation lengths), due to fishing pressure and weak recruitment. In this portion of its range, catches have declined from an average of 15,000-20,000 metric tonnes per year in the mid 1980s to just 20 metric tonnes in the past three years (2009-2011). In 2010, this species was considered 257% overexploited based on fishing mortality (F current/F 0.1) in the northern CECAF area. In the southern portion of this species range, from Guinea Bissau to Angola, the CECAF working group evaluates aggregated Trachurus species, the majority of which is comprised of T. trecae. Assuming no declines in the European portion of its range and greater than 90% declines in the Eastern Central Atlantic portion of its range, this species is estimated to have experienced at least a 35-40% decline over the past three generation lengths (30-35 years), and is listed as Vulnerable under A2bd.
